Transportation

Unlike other destinations in Thailand, there are no tuk-tuks on Koh Samui.

Taxis are infamously expensive here as local drivers refuse to use meters with local trips starting ฿300-400 up to ฿1,000 for trips across the island.

Having personal transportation like a scooter or car offers more freedom and flexibility. Cars can be rented from around ฿10,000-35,000 per month with scooters renting for around 3,000-10,000฿ per month.

If you are staying on Koh Samui for more than 3 months, a Thai driving license is required by law. You can apply for both motorcycle licenses and car driving licenses in the Department of Land Transport offices located in Lipa Noi on the west of the island.

Koh Samui roads can be dangerous, especially the steep mountain roads and sand covered roads after rain so important to drive carefully and wear a helmet or seat belt at all times. Though you will see many people riding scooters without helmets, it is legally required and you will be issued a small fine of ฿300-500 if pulled over by the local police.

Employment Opportunities

Job opportunities for expats are mainly in the tourism and service industries and often its who you know rather than what you know that helps secure employment here. It’s advisable to use online platforms such as Facebook job groups and networking to seek employment before moving to the island.

There are severe penalties for foreigners working in Thailand without work permits and there are many areas of work that expats are not allowed to perform. Foreigners are also expected to take management roles and cannot do direct physical work themselves, but rather direct Thai employees to perform any physical tasks.

Legal and Visa Concerns

Understanding visa types and legal issues is crucial for expats. Common visas include Tourist, Non-Immigrant, Education visas, Retirement, and Marriage Visas, each with specific requirements. It is often a good idea to talk with your local Thai Embassy in your own country to get the most up-to-date information before coming to Thailand or there are several visa agencies on the island such as Samui Visa Run.

Visiting the Thai Immigration office in Maenam can be frustrating and can often feel like you are going around in circles but some important advice is not to lose your patience or temper with any immigration officers, it will not be appreciated.

Expat Communities and Popular Areas

The most popular areas for ex-pats are the most populated towns on the northeast of the island including Bophut, Bangrak, Plai Laem, Cheong Mon, Chaweng, Chaweng Noi and Lamai. Some prefer the more peaceful south and west of the island where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the more populated areas and get more for your money when it comes to housing and eating out.
